Mini mage is a 2D platformer in early alpha. You play as a wizard, doused by shrinking potion who has to fight through his garden to return to his tower and revert back to his original size. With controls inspired by rocket jumping from old school first person shooter games, this is not your typical platformer.

The demo is currently available! Move with WASD or controller left stick, aim with mouse or controller right stick.

FAQ:

Why can't I jump?

You need to unlock the Blastwave spell. Keep moving to the right, pick up the potion liquid, and then move to the shrine on the left and hold down E / X on controller.

Cute game! I like the idea of rocketjumping! I just have 1 major gripe: the enemies still deal damage in their death animation, which feels unintenional. Also aiming down, which you do so often, feels clunky because the cute mage looks down sideways.

I've heard similar remarks -- thanks! Might have to look at that rotating staff some more.

The caterpillars are intended to be poisonous when they die, but if the spiders are dealing damage even after dying, that's definitely a bug..if the caterpillars aren't telegraphing this well though, that's also an issue.

Yeah it's just the caterpillars, that makes sense, what with the bloody explosion! Keep up the good work :)

The cursor you use is a little simplistic. If you spent 20 minutes making a nicer one, that would up the game play a lot! Although most people dont pay attention, it still unconsioulsy makes it nicer. I think something white that would be a cool runic shape would be cool!

Thanks, it's definitely a little too simple! I playtested the game mostly with a controller which causes the cursor to disappear, which is why it wasn't much of a priority.

other than the fact that i cant get past an area because i turn invisible there(I assume thats a bug i can tell you more if you want) this game is great! do you have a disicord community?  I would love to join!

I'd love to hear about the bug -- I had one person experience the same thing, but nobody else so I think it's a hardware issue. What kind of PC do you have? Does it happen in the spider area? Do you disappear right when the spiders drop down from their webs?

I will join the discord a send you a screenshot of where it is. it is very inconsistent but it is in the area where you need to climb up past the spiders. and sometimes it will glitch in and out. I'm using windows 10 on a lenovo miix 520, which is not for gaming at all but still works for it

Hey I just downloaded the game and can’t jump. I have tried every button the key board yet I still can’t jump at all By jump I mean can’t move up or down at all

There is no jump! Keep moving to the right and you'll learn a spell that you activate with your left mouse button (or right gamepad trigger)

Super cute game! I love all the bug animations and the rocket jump inspired mechanics. One thing I think you should look into is the sound design, some sounds (like the spider and death sounds) seem much louder than other sounds in the mix. I think allowing the wand to rotate a full 360 degrees would also help, I found it hard to aim directly below the character because the wand wouldn't track to my mouse if I aimed straight down. The shrines are a great idea, but some feel kind of slow to activate. With the game being so focused on movement and momentum, it feels very strange to have to slow down and sit still for so long to save the game. I'd recommend making the save shrines instant rather than taking a few seconds to interact with them, I think that would speed up gameplay a lot. Same goes for the mana regeneration, having it regenerate slower while walking seems very counterintuitive. It felt like the I would gain good momentum while blasting, but then would have to stop moving for a second to regenerate my mana. I think having mana regenerate at a consistent speed when the player is grounded would speed up the gameplay too. I hope some of this feedback helps! :) I adore the style this game has going for it and it has so much potential, keep up the great work!

Thanks so much for the great feedback! The aiming I entirely understand. The problem with rotating it all the way was that the animation didn't look good that way; earlier there was an aimer UI element that showed where you were aiming, but I removed that as I thought it wasn't necessary. Good to know that it may have been useful though.

Your thoughts on the pacing are great. I was worried about people being able to skip through too fast, but the slow mana regeneration might just feel like punishment. Definitely good to look at again.

It means a lot that you enjoyed it! Thanks again!
